Kano Local Government Elections See Low Voter Turnout Amid Peaceful Conduct

The local government elections held in Kano State on Saturday experienced a low voter turnout, particularly in the Kano metropolis and surrounding areas. Voting materials arrived late at some polling centers, delaying the start of voting. For instance, at the History and Culture Bureau, voting had not commenced as of 10:44 am due to the late arrival of materials.

However, some polling units, such as the Tarauni PHC and Gandun Albasa Special Primary School, reported timely starts, with the latter seeing significant voter queues. Voters expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the elections, contradicting initial concerns of potential crises.

A voter noted, "Many people anticipated crisis during the election, but thank God it's peaceful." Another voter appreciated the residents' compliance with movement restrictions, contributing to the peaceful atmosphere. A presiding officer at Gandun Albasa confirmed that voting began shortly after 8:00 am, with voters casting their ballots in an orderly manner.

This trend of low voter turnout echoes similar patterns observed in other local government elections in Nigeria, such as in Anambra ¹.
